Erasmus: the top host universities

It’s 30 years since the Erasmus exchange programme was put into action across Europe. This anniversary merited a quick round up of the best 20 host universities across Europe, ranked by the number of Erasmus students they welcome. Enough to make you want to jet off abroad !

A Spanish top three

Unsurprisingly, Spain has quite a few universities in the top 20. Between the high quality of life, some of the cheapest rents in Europe and a huge range of options available, the Spanish universities have some serious attractions. Three Spanish universities sit at the top of the leaderboard and there are another 2 in the Top 20.

The University of Grenada, the leader of the pack, has so far welcomed 1,918 students since the start of the Erasmus program. Besides the huge number of subjects on offer and the remarkably multilingual library, this university seduces students with its location. Grenada is a festive city, full of history and just next door to one of the most beautiful sights in Europe: The Alhambra.

The Complutense University of Madrid comes in at second place, thanks to its wide range of courses. A very cosmopolitan city, this establishment offers courses completely in English and intensive courses in Spanish. However, it is the idea of living in such a beautiful, charming city with a rich cultural history which attracts most students.

To complete the podium, the University of Valencia comes in third. The university offers high quality courses in the stunning setting of Valencia which is very popular with students. The city is lively and beautiful, and there are many events organized to allow students to get to know one another. Here, you can also study in a variety of languages.

Italy and the Czech Republic also win big

After the Spanish universities, a huge number of students have chosen to study at the University of Bologna and the Charles University in Prague (Univerzita Karlova) over the past 30 years.

The University of Bologna is one of the oldest universities in the world. It offers a wide range of courses and it one of the largest in Italy. The high quality of life in the city, as well as its central location which allows students to travel across the country, also contribute to its allure for foreign students.

Further east in Europe, Charles University likewise offers a variety of courses and is frequently at the top of the global rankings for the quality of its teaching. The architectural beauty of Prague, the relatively low cost of living and the lively atmosphere which pervades the town are very appealing for students.
